With Thanksgiving then Christmas coming soon, followed shortly by New Year’s, many of us will be having guests coming in from out-of-town to stay at our homes. Similarly, we may be spending time in the homes of others, churches, or auditoriums. Either way, this can easily throw off the normal daily routine for our loved ones. Whenever these changes occur, it can often result in temporary disorientation, and occasional disruptive or combative behavior for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia’s. Always remember, whenever there is a change in the ‘normal’ routine, whether it is from visitors in the home, or being in a new place, give the dementia victim significantly more time and attention. Be patient and understanding, and plan as much as possible in advance. The extra effort and attention can easily minimize the potential problems caused by a change in their routine.
